Is Your Facility’s Concrete Floor Damaging Your Forklift?

We all know what it feels like when driving our car, to hit the raised edge of a steel road plate covering a temporary road repair job. And we know the feeling all too well when we unexpectedly hit a speedbump in the road. We know that our car tires, suspension, and steering, is taking a beating.

It is the same beating an industrial warehouse forklift takes when hitting a raised joint between two concrete floor slabs.

Raised Concrete Slab Edges Can Cause Unexpected Damage to Equipment and Product

The raised edge of the concrete can not only damage the forklift, but it can damage the product and can even cause the forklift’s load to shift and spill from the forks. And the forklift operator will feel the abrupt beating each time the forklift crosses over the raised edge of the concrete.

Concrete Floor Repair by Blackwell’s, Inc.

repaired concrete floor jointWe have been repairing industrial concrete flooring for almost 40 years. In that amount of time, we have seen and repaired all types of damage to a concrete floor.

The two photos shown below are how we found the floor in this facility.

The first photo shows the raised edge of a concrete slab in this industrial facility. This raised edge and unevenness of the two adjoining slabs is the result of a phenomenon known as curling, which can occur when the top and bottom of a concrete slab dries at different rates and temperatures.

Here are the steps we took to remove the raised edge of one concrete slab and make the crossing of the floor joint between the two floor slabs much smoother.

  1. Cut a keyway on both sides of the slab joint for a transition between the old and newly repaired, ground, and sealed concrete
  2. Used grinders to remove the high slab edge and create a gradual slope across the joint
  3. Repaired the spalled edges of the slab on both sides of the joint
  4. Recut the repaired joint
  5. Filled the newly cut joint with polyurea
  6. Sealed the repaired and ground concrete with a decorative sealer
