One Inspired Biomimicry. The Other is Something Else.

greasy industrial exhaust fan cleaning needs and lamprey mouth

Looks can be deceiving: One photo is of nature’s design. The other is a man-made mess.

Leonardo da Vinci studied the anatomy and flight of birds in his quest to design a “flying machine”. He had hundreds of drawings and sketches of flying machines based on his studies of bird flight. This was long before the aviation pioneers, Orville and Wilbur Wright, successfully built the first engine operated airplane.

Was Leonardo, back in 1505, the first to design machines based on the intricate designs found in nature? Maybe.

Today, there are many examples of bio-inspired technology but perhaps the best-known is Velcro. Developed by George de Mestral, a Swiss engineer, the tiny hooks and loops in Velcro, was bio-inspired from the seeds of a burdock plant sticking to the engineer’s socks and dog as they walked through a field.

Biomimicry is a creation inspired by nature.

Bio-inspired technology has a name — biomimicry.  Simply explained, biomimicry is a creation inspired by nature.

Now, about these two photos. The photo shown above and on the left is that of a lamprey’s mouth parts. Lampreys are parasitic fish that bore into the flesh of other fish.  Lampreys are not pretty, but they have bio-inspired engineers with the vision of a tiny robot to find diseases inside the human body.

That’s biomimicry.

The photo on the right looks like it could be the mouthparts of perhaps a different species of lamprey. But it’s not. It’s something else entirely.

A very greasy industrial exhaust fan needing industrial cleaning.

This photo is of a very greasy industrial exhaust fan, in an industrial food manufacturing kitchen. that just needs industrial cleaning. It was taken before Blackwell’s, Inc. completed the industrial cleaning needed to remove the built-up grease on it, as well as the fan housing and exhaust ductwork,

The similarity and symmetry of nature-made and man-made creations can be very surprising.
