Their story began in 1983. The U.S. economy was shaken, interest rates were climbing into the high teens, and job prospects for a pair of recent newlyweds were slim. Faced with an uncertain future, Ann and David Blackwell made a bold decision. Out of sheer necessity—and backed by the crucial support of Ann’s teaching salary—they made a modest but pivotal investment in chimney sweep equipment.
With fuel and utility prices soaring back then, just about everyone was burning wood to heat their homes. The Blackwells saw an unmet need, rolled up their sleeves, and got to work.
Their journey, guided by what they describe as “God’s grace, youth, hard work, and ‘faith in the unseen’ path before us,” became the bedrock of Blackwell’s, Inc. That founding faith is permanently immortalized in the company motto: “Non Visus Fides” (Faith Not Seen).
