Cleaning a Sulfuric Acid Tank Is No Treat (but it can be quite tricky)

Depending on the job, confined space cleaning may require chemical resistant outerwear.

What may look like a Halloween costume of a character from a horror film, is actually part of the protective gear one of our associates donned before entering the confined space of an emptied sulfuric acid tank.

For those of you who may have forgotten your chemistry, sulfuric acid is colorless, odorless, and extremely corrosive. It has an attraction to water and is used as a drying agent and is used to dehydrate certain compounds. It can cause severe burns.

Sulfuric acid is an important industrial chemical worldwide and plays a role in just about all of our manufactured goods. Most storage tanks for sulfuric acid are made of carbon steel and over the years will buildup iron sulfate sludge in the bottom of the tank.

Industrial cleaning requires us at times to perform work in confined spaces such as these tanks because the personnel at these industrial facilities often lack the skills and training to enter those areas.

With the safety training we go through, and with the right equipment we wear and use, jobs such as cleaning the interior of tanks, including sulfuric acid tanks, can be accomplished with little fear of injury.
