Confined Space Work Requires Training

confined space training

Confined space training prepared this Blackwell's associate to safely enter this vessel.

While most of us will never know what it's like to clean in the confined space of an industrial oven or a latex storage tank, there are people who do just that. We've got many of those on our crews here at Blackwell's. Yes, it can be very dirty work . . . the kind of dirty work you would see on an episode of the Disney Chanel's TV show "Dirty Jobs", hosted by Mike Rowe. Jobs like this are not only dirty but they can be very dangerous. One of the reasons is that places like these are known as confined spaces. A confined space has restricted areas for entry or exit. There may be only one way in and one way out. They are not designed for continuous worker occupancy. Confined spaces include underground vaults, storage bins, manholes, pits, silos, process vessels, and pipelines. Industrial ovens and latex storage tanks fit right in this group. Confined spaces may also contains or has the potential to contain a hazardous atmosphere, materials that may entrap a person, asphyxiate a person, or any other recognized hazards.

How do we prepare our crews to work in these kinds of places? It starts with creating a culture of safety and includes plenty of hands-on training in "what to do" and "what not to do". The CEO of our company had the forethought to construct a simulator just for confined space training. And we put it to use.
