The Two Ways to Clean a Polished Concrete Floor

Polished concrete is a wonderful alternative for industrial flooring with many great benefits. And one of the benefits is that it’s a beautiful “low maintenance floor”.

But don’t make the mistake and assume that means “no maintenance” or that the floor can be cleaned just any old way. Both assumptions are wrong. There are two ways to clean polished concrete floors . . . the right way and the wrong way. The wrong way leaves the concrete floor still dirty.

This test sample clearly shows the difference using the correct cleaning method makes when cleaning polished concrete floors.

This photo shows the difference between a polished concrete floor cleaned both ways. The photo is that of a DIRTY polished floor, with a patch of a CLEAN polished floor. This floor is in a production room of an industry that produces rubber rings and gaskets. Fine “dust” gets on everything, including the floor. We did a small cleaning job on the floor to show the maintenance crew what a proper floor cleaning can do versus what they were doing to clean the floor. We wanted them to use softer scrubbing brushes, and a floor cleaner designed for polished concrete. The physical concrete evidence is pretty convincing.

Polished concrete cleaners are designed with surfactants to lift and remove soils from the fine pores of the polished surface. A daily schedule of cleaning the floor with a quality concrete cleaner/conditioner and using the proper machinery and brushes in large areas and a mop in small areas makes a huge difference and will not leave a hazy residue on the surface like an inexpensive neutral cleaner will.
